The Site Riyadh North sits on an 8 million square meters land, about 28 kilometers north of Riyadh city center (Kingdom Center) and 19 kilometers west of King Khalid International Airport. The entire site is 3 to 4 kilometers long and 2 to 3 kilometers wide. Riyadh North represents the recent burst of new developments that has occurred along a large band of area stretching South-North from the Riyadh city center. This band runs between King Khalid International Airport and the natural/cultural/historical heritage land of Arriyadh oases. This gives Riyadh North easy access to a major international transportation hub and a wide stretch of green/cultural reservation. The prevailing wind comes from North of the site and runs in parallel to the major thoroughfares, which requires the project some spatial and landscape considerations (e.g., thick palm treed belts surrounding the entire area) to act as wind breaks and climate controls. Given the arid desert climate, Riyadh North provides a large area of landscape, waterscape, and shaded open spaces. On this flat land, a central green/water axis called Canal Park is planned to give climatic comfort and visual pleasure.
Transportation Network Two highways, King Fahd Road and King Khalid Road (Salbouk Road ) and a number of paralleled roads link the site to the Riyadh city center. These lines of well maintained roads along with the distance to Riyadh city, 28 kilometers, will enable comfortable daily commute from the site to workplaces in Riyadh. Many other roads running East-West complete a grid patterned road system around the site, which will safely incorporate the increasing number of automobile use in Riyadh Metropolitan. In addition, a monorail transportation is currently planned that will connect the site to various spots in the Riyadh city center.
Context The site neighbors various future development plans which include public facility and government areas South, recreational reserve West, and urban development areas all around. A responsive design has been developed and will pursue connections and interrelations with this context.
